Other than also enjoying the odd glass of the chilled article in the Nippon on Macquarie Street, I thought I had little in common with the notorious New South Wales bent copper Roger Rogerson. Until recently.
Rogerson, of course, has made a new career for himself as a raconteur. He’s done a couple of tours of the beer barns with other family favourites like Chopper Reid and Mark “Jacko” Jackson, spinning yarns of murder and mayhem. If crims can do it, why not put a pack of former staffers, journos and pols on the road?
Wheel them out to the same audience at the same sort of venue to tell their tales. The punters would roar as they have all their prejudices confirmed – that the people who constantly tell them what to do and think are a bunch of drunken, up-themselves tossers.
Break if up with some montages of famous front pages – like Truth on Billy Snedden’s sad passing – and compilaton reels of great interviews – “How does it feel to have blood on your hands?” – and I reckon we’ve got a pretty good package.
Make it an anti-literary event – a million miles from any deadly dull PC politics in the pub session and light years away from an evening at Gleebooks or Readings. Would it work, dear readers? Any promoters out there with any ideas? Any suggestions about who our panel should be?
