The word from within Fairfax is that new chief operating officer Brian
Evans – the likely successor to Fred Hilmer as CEO – is about to
announce a major restructure of senior management at the ailing
newspaper group.

A well-known cost-cutter, Evans is expected to
abolish at least one of the top executive management team (EMT in
Hilmerspeak) positions, if not more. The main victim is likely to be
the company’s commercial director Alan Revell, whose dislike of Evans
is well-known and has been the talk of Darling Park since Evans was
appointed.

It’s also possible that Evans will take the radical step of installing a manager at The Age and, even more radically, appointing someone who lives in Melbourne.
