After Australia failed to take a single point from the Confederations
Cup following its 2-0 loss to Tunisia in their last Group A match this
morning, SBS soccer pundits won’t be the only ones asking loaded
questions about Frank Farina’s future as Socceroos manager.

I have not been a Farina fan even before he failed to take us to the
last World Cup and would simply ask if any Crikey reader can produce an
example of, say, a top 50 FIFA ranked World Cup nation who, like us,
retained a manager after he failed to qualify his team for the last
finals?

Australia was made to look very ordinary this morning as we went
down with a whimper. No matter how much the Australian camp talks up the
four goals it scored against Germany and Argentina, the truth is that
defensively we’re a shambles. The task of getting us back to Germany
for next year’s World Cup is best left to someone other than Farina.

Even if we do manage to get to Germany, the reality is that Farina’s failure to organise a younger and more cohesive defence
means this
unit will be one year older and slower and ever more suspect.
