Fairfax’s correspondent Annabel Crabb filed a bizarre Live8 feature in yesterday’s Sunday Age under the clever headline “Just hours to go… Can Bob fix it?”
The main thrust of the story concerned how Bob Geldof and his mates are hoodwinking the West into believing the Live8 concerts (and associated protests) will improve the lot of ordinary Africans. Geldof and Live8 were heavily criticised over a clash between the Live8 concerts and a previously organised “Make Poverty History” campaign rally in Edinburgh at the weekend.
Crabb reports the Edinburgh clash occurs “several days before Thursday’s G8 meeting of world leaders in nearby Gleneagles,” and “matters have further been confused by Geldof’s high-spirited demand that Britons converge in their millions on Edinburgh on Wednesday.”
But it’s Crabb who’s very confused. Live8 did not clash at the weekend with the poverty rally – the globally televised concerts are being staged next weekend and the G8 meeting is not this week but next when Geldof is urging protesting hordes to descend on Scotland.
Oh and Geldof actually turned up to the poverty rally in Edinburgh to address the crowd and lend them his support!
