Grant Hackett swam his second best time ever to win the men’s 400m
freestyle gold at the FINA World Swimming Championships in
Montreal earlier this morning, while his biggest rival and Athens
golden boy Michael Phelps – never gave a yelp!
Incredibly, the six-time Athens
gold medalist failed to qualify for the final after earlier predicting he would beat Hackett. Instead, he
sank to seventh in his morning heat and was gone. But if Phelps was shocked at
his failure, Hackett was always the man to beat with the second best time
on record in the 400m behind Ian Thorpe. Hackett dominated the final, but was still a couple of seconds behind
Thorpe’s world record and also missed his personal best.
Australia’s
second gold came with the women’s 4 x 100m relay with Libby Lenton swimming the
final leg.
