Body armour come the state election? “It looks like Opposition education spokesman Victor Perton did some duty-free shopping while he was in Rwanda last week,” the Herald Sunreports today. “In Parliament yesterday, Perton turned up in something that looked like a safari suit – an outfit more in place in Africa than Spring St.”
ACT Liberals plotting: Was last week’s corridor contretemps a symptom of deeper divisions in the ACT Liberals? Three of the seven Liberals in the Territory Assembly have reportedly offered the leadership to current deputy Bill Stefaniak, the deal being that Richard Mulcahy, currently jostling top dog Brendan Smyth, becomes deputy.
Splits within splits: “The Liberals and Nationals will field rival candidates in four marginal seats at the next state election after dumping a central plank of their coalition deal,” the Courier-Mail reported earlier this week . “The decision to abandon joint preselections and allow three-cornered contests could hand Labor crucial seats at the election due early next year.” For once, Crikey understands, the decision is the result of tensions between the Liberals and Nationals. It’s all down to the disastrous divisions that wrack the Queensland Liberal Party.
