Three days to go, another night of four hours of sleep and we’re staggering to the line, struggling for media oxygen but still seriously in the hunt courtesy of these amazing preference flows.
While the Greens are dominating the airwaves, People Power finally cracked a mention on 3AW this morning! Sadly, morning presenter Neil Mitchell declared it to be “nutters, whackos and fringe-dwellers day” and our President Vern Hughes was put straight to air at 8.40am and then put through the ringer over plans to slash 20,000 bureaucrats. He held his ground well but this really is a tough gig.
We had a disability rally on the steps of Parliament at 11.30am this morning which will hopefully score some precious seconds on the TV news tonight, and No Pokies South Australian MP Nick Xenophon has penned a strong opinion piece which should see the light of day in one of the papers before Friday.
Today is all about crazy logistics. There will be numerous runs in the station wagon to the printer picking up another 670,000 how-to-vote cards and madly attempting to distribute them among our 43 candidates.
The missus is unhappy after hearing I’ve spent more than $4000 on 150,000 colour A4 how to vote cards so we’re frantically emailing and ringing anyone we’ve ever met to try and round up the 200 volunteers needed to distribute the lot.
It’s interesting which approach tactics work well. I’m still waiting to hear back from the Rio Tinto spindoctor after sending this one:
Ian, how’s this for a deal? You hand out how to vote cards for me for at least two hours on Saturday and I’ll promise not to ask any questions at next year’s Rio AGM. Take it or leave it.
Let’s hope no one takes it the wrong way and construes this to be extortion. You’ve got to use every lever available in the last days of a campaign – and you’ve still got to laugh.
Finally, it’s time for the pundits to put their predictions to the test. I hereby forecast that People Power’s Gabriela Byrne will win the fifth spot in Eastern Victoria courtesy of independent, DLP, Family First, Labor and then Green preferences.
If this happens – don’t say you weren’t warned.
PS. Must ring grandpa in England tonight for his 107th birthday!
