America’s Democrats seem to have caught the same disease that’s rife in the NSW state Liberals – a greater desire to have the candidate of their particular choice than to win the election. Either that or Karl Rove is secretly running the party.

While the West Wing/Obama/any-woman-for-president fans might salivate about a run-off between Obama and Hillary for the Democrat nomination, the Republicans are having their faith in Santa Claus restored.

Here’s the party of the worst US president in living memory, the party that’s just lost control of the Senate and Congress, but to keep the White House all it will have to do is put John McCain up against either a black man whose name is nearly Osama or a woman with a dubious financial past who’s popular in New York.

Yesterday’s Crikey editorial seemed too PC to mention the elephant that’s not just in the living room but has its trunk sticking out the front door and its backside blocking the kitchen.

The important thing for the Democrats is to choose a presidential candidate who will win votes in the red states, not just make Democrats feel good about themselves. The red states are the ones that voted for George W — twice. “Liberal” is not considered a compliment in that America. Overt feminism doesn’t convert the bible belt. If you want the red necks to come out and vote, put up a liberal black candidate.

Bush is the best thing going for the Democrats – but he’s not running at the next election. Someone should tell them.

There’s more than a little credibility in the conspiracy theory about Rupert Murdoch being happy to promote Hillary as a candidate because she would be so easy and such good copy to destroy.

You might not like Karl Rove, but he does an amazing job for his party.
