I’m giving a talk tomorrow to a group of local finance directors from multinational companies and as part of the research we’ve unearthed another 15 multinationals that are turning over more than $200 million a year in Australia.
While we published an updated list last week of 69 Australian companies generating more than $200 million a year in Australia, this additional 15 brings the foreign list to 199. And there are sure to be plenty more.
Few people realise what a huge part of the Australian economy is operated by foreign companies. If Houston-based TCW Group succeeds with its $812 million bid for Queensland Gas, we’ll have a “200 doing $200m foreign club”. Here are the latest additions:
Abbott Australasia, US: turned over $275 million in 2004 from its pharmaceutical and toiletry wholesaling business and employs 340 people in Australia.
Accenture, US: global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company with 145,000, $20 billion in annual revenue and a big Australian operation.

Compass Group, US: catering giant that employs 10,000 Australians and turns over $900 million.
Hitachi, Japan: power tools, train systems, air conditioning, data and mining equipment are just some of the activities undertaken by this huge conglomerate.
Infosys: the Indian IT giant has more than 650 employees in Australia and a burgeoning business.
Kyocera Mita, Japan: big player in printers, photocopiers and digital cameras.
Laing O’Rourke, UK: privately-owned construction company with 23,000 employees that bought Barclay Mowlem in 2006 and has major contracts in NSW and Queensland.
LogicaCMG, UK: London-based IT company with 30,000 staff whose systems are used for 65% of all text messages. Has offices in all Australian capital cities.
Maxxium Worldwide, Netherlands: spirits company that owns or distributes brands like The Famous Grouse Scotch Whisky, Rémy Martin cognac, Jim Beam Bourbon, ABSOLUT vodka, Cointreau, Sauza Tequila, Maker’s Mark Bourbon, Aquavit, Grants, Glenfiddich, Drambuie and E&J Gallo.
Sanofi-Aventis, French: pharmaceutical giant with global revenues of $27 billion. Focused on major therapeutic areas such as cardiovascular diseases, bone diseases, oncology, central nervous system, diabetes, allergies and infectious diseases and vaccines.
