Is the PM going to pull the plug? Do the punters know something the pundits don’t?Centrebet is no longer take bets on Bennelong. Sources say it’s because the money for “any other candidate” and “McKew” was flooding in on the back of speculation that the one-time $1.16 favourite, John Howard, would be scratched from the event.
Is an answer in the mail? The agit-prop brigade at GetUp have 10,143 postcards collected from Bennelong voters during Saturday’s NSW state election to deliver to the Prime Minister, urging him to repatriate David Hicks.
Last month, the Crikey-Morgan poll found that 62% of Bennelong voters think the Prime Minister and the government should ask the United States to have David Hicks immediately returned to Australia.
69% of Bennelong electors said that if Hicks is found guilty of the proposed charges against him, he should be allowed to serve his sentence in Australia.
“The Prime Minister won’t need any reminding that 10,143 is a very significant proportion of his marginal electorate,” GetUp executive director Brett Solomon says.
