Startling news: according to a new survey by Sydney’s Daily Tele , almost half of federal politicians turn their televisions off at the wall, more than 40% have rainwater tanks and 38% have signed up to green power. Every respondent claimed to have energy-saving light bulbs, all had water-saving shower heads, all avoided using dryers. Six Labor MPs had signed up to get their electricity from renewable sources; so had three coalition MPs.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister even went so far as to observe that the PM had a “small number” of rainwater tanks and was looking at installing a larger one. And Peter Andren apparently captures his shower water for re-use on the garden, a place that looms even larger in his immediate work future.

Which takes us to the steps of the federal Parliament just before dawn, and the environmental scandal that last night’s 60 Minutes Kevin Rudd profile missed (one that caught the eye of the good folk at Media Monitors):
