Helen Coonan’s department (DCITA) is sitting on an $18m advertising campaign it’s about to unleash promoting online safety for Aussie kids. Government departments throughout Canberra have been asked to come up with (phoney) ways they can demonstrate they’re on board with the ad campaign. The call-to-action from the campaign will be a 1-800 toll free number to call for your free net filter CD ROM. Yeah right. I bet lots of kids are going to take up that offer. Yeah right again. I bet all the parents who take up the offer aren’t going to have a clue how to load it, let alone what settings to choose. Of course — they’ll ask their kids to install the filters.
