There’s continued speculation in the NSW Liberal Party over who will actually end up as the candidate for the should-be safe seat of Cook.

The party’s right-wing controlled state executive will decide on the official endorsement of preselection winner Michael Towke on Monday night, amidst allegations of numerous lies on his nomination form that breach the Oath Acts.

NSW Liberal director Graham Jaeschke has told the Sydney Morning Herald that he is willing to approve a statement from a party member if it attempts to “correct the record”. But what will the various Taliban and flat-earther parliamentarians who endorsed Towke do to make amends?

“I am please to support the nomination of Mr Michael Towke as the Liberal candidate for Cook at the 2007 Federal Election,” MLC Marie Ficarra wrote in a letter distributed to preselectors.

“Michael Towke would be the best candidate to represent the Liberal Party in the seat of Cook as he…has beliefs and values which reflect our Cook community.”

Her fellow Legislative Councillor Charlie Lynn addressed a letter to Towke direct.

“Your personal achievements, your integrity and your commitment to your local community make you a valuable asset to our Liberal Party,” he said.

Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells wrote: “I am very pleased to provide a reference for Mr Michael Towke in support of his candidature for the Federal seat of Cook. Michael’s professional, community and political experience will ensure he will be an effective representative for our Party in Cook.”

Fierravanti-Wells added: “Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss Michael’s candidature further.”

Presumably the enquires have been flooding in: “Did you do any homework, Senator?”
