The Winners: Seven News was the winner with 1.533 million, then Psychics on Seven at 7.30pm with 1.424 million and Nine’s Wipeout, also at 7.30pm with 1.404 million. All Saints averaged a solid 1.356 million at 8.30pm and won the slot, with Today Tonight averaging 1.352 million in 5th and struggling. Nine’s 7pm repeat of Two and a Half Men averaged 1.351 million and A Current Affair was 7th with 1.332 million. The fresh and repeat episodes of Two and a Half Men averaged 1.311 million at 8.30pm and episode two of the NCIS repeats on Ten at 9.30pm averaged 1.280 million. Home and Away at 7pm on Seven averaged 1.256 million in 10th spot, with the 7pm ABC News next with 1.215 million. The 8.30pm episode of the NCIS repeats on Ten averaged 1.106 million in 13th and last was Family Fortunes on the ABC at 8pm (the Peter Brock story, again!) with 1.084 million.
The Losers: Big Brother: 837,000 last night for Ten. Ladette To Lady on Nine at 9.30pm: 759,000. How To Have S-x After Marriage on Nine at 10.30pm, 483,000. Seven’s Air Crash Investigations at 10.30pm: 551,000, or Cheaters at 11.30pm on Seven, 281,000. Obviously with the Tour De France not on for the mid-way rest day, a lot of people were practising last night. And of course Ramsay’s Boiling Point on Seven at 10pm: 689,000. Not even warm.
News & CA: Seven News again won nationally and in every market but Today Tonight had a battle and needed its Perth margin to win after losing Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide to ACA. Ten News averaged 873,000, the late News/Sports Tonight, 528,000. The 7.30 Report averaged 979,000, Lateline, 262,000 and Lateline Business, 134,000. The 6.30pm SBS News averaged 216,000 at 6.30pm and 176,000 at 9.30pm. 7am Sunrise back over 300,000 to 322,000, 7am Today edged up to 259,000.
The Stats: Seven won All People 6pm to midnight with 29.2% (27.5% last week) from Nine with 26.9% (26.7%), Ten with 22.6% (23.0%), the ABC with 17.1% (14.8%) and SBS with 4.3% (8.0%). Seven won all five metro markets (Adelaide by just 0.1% from Nine). Nine still leads the week 28.4% to 27.5%. In regional areas a win to Prime/7Qld with 31.7% from WIN/NBN on 24.8%, Southern Cross (Ten) (with 24.2%), the ABC with 14.6% and SBS on 4.6%.
Glenn Dyer’s comments: Psychics on Seven v silliness on Nine in Wipeout: more than 2.8 million people tune in to watch two programs that don’t mean a thing, entertain in an odd way, but more importantly, don’t require us to think.
At 7pm on Nine the repeat of Two and a Half Men averaged 1.351 million, at 8.30pm the combination of a fresh episode and then a repeat until 9.30pm attracted fewer viewers: 1.311 million. That’s 90 minutes of mindless TV: entertaining in repeat. If another Australian TV watcher complains about the number of repeats on TV again I will merely refer them to the success of Nine’s repeats of Two and a Half Men. Australian TV viewers watch secretly but complain publicly. And I will throw in the two repeats of NCIS on Ten from 8.30pm to 10.30pm. The second attracted 1.280 million at 9.30pm and the first, 1.106 million at 8.30pm — I rest my case.
Tonight is the best night of the week. Spicks And Specks, The Gruen Transfer and The Hollowmen from 8.30pm to 10pm on the ABC. Animal Rescue on Seven at 7.30pm, Fire 000 and Search and Rescue on Nine from 7.30pm to 8.30pm for their final episodes; Jamie Oliver’s Eat To Save Your Life at 9.30pm on Ten (what you won’t see on Ramsay or other cooking shows). My Generation on SBS at 7.30pm and then the Tour is back at 10pm.
