Evolution can be a slow and tricky business, maybe that’s why after nearly 10 years of constant daily publishing (yep, it’s our big anniversary in February) the format of the daily Crikey subscriber email has barely changed. Until today that is.
Today, as you’ll have noticed by now, we have a new format for your newsletter. We think it delivers a daily email that is sharper, clearer, easier to read and navigate. But don’t fret, it’s still packed with everything you’ve come to expect and love from your daily dose of Crikey. And it’s all still here in one place. We recognise that Crikey subscribers want to receive their Crikey by and large as an email product, not just a set of shortcuts to a website. So here it is: one email, all in one place.
The biggest change, apart from some tweaks to typefaces and story widths is the new index up there at the top of this edition. All our top stories now come with a quick introductory grab. We realise that most people pick and choose what they want to read in most Crikey editions, and this new, expanded indexing will make those choices easier.
Find a story that interests you then click on the read more link below the short summary, or, lower in the index, below the headline. That will take you straight to the start of the item you want to read. When you’re done, the back to top link at the bottom of that story will snap you back to the index.
Why have we done this? Well, we realise that sometimes the Crikey email can be long and unwieldy. And while we try to keep things as short and snappy as we can, we also believe that serious issues are worth teasing out and strong stories are worth telling at length.
Clear navigation around your email is the key.
The rest of it is pretty straightforward: a spring clean of our typefaces, a set column width to make our stories easier on the eye, links in the right hand margin of each story to related stories from the Crikey archive. These links will take you to our website. Each story also carries subject tags, that will also drill down into 10 years of Crikey content online. When you subscribe to Crikey, you don’t just get the daily news, you get everything we’ve ever done. You’ll see links up above to our extensive blog network and a counter on each story to tell you if people have started commenting on it online.
But after all that, the biggest change is not much change at all. 20-25 great stories, a pause for thought and laughter from First Dog On The Moon, Tips and Rumours, Keane in Canberra, video of the day, Rundle, Dyer, TV Ratings, Simons on Media …
Crikey: 10 years in your inbox and now spring cleaned. Enjoy.
We really want to know what you think — please email us at boss@crikey.com.au with “email feedback” in the subject line.
