Ever wanted to now what your favourite band consumed backstage before a gig?
Overnight, Crikey obtained the complete rider list for the artists performing at the very popular St Jeromes Laneway Festival, which was staged in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Auckland, Adelaide and Perth in late January and early February this year.
As expected there’s a fair amount of alcohol requested. Whiskey, vodka, even Pimms.
There was not, however, a local celebrity on any rider list, which is the urban myth attached to the bizarre rider request by Australian rockers You Am I.
Melbourne indie rock group Oh Mercy asked for a “local souvenir tea towel”. Crikey spoke to Oh Mercy manager Natalie Bell who told us that Oh Mercy did not receive a tea towel but did get a banner from the University of Western Australia when the festival was in Perth.
But it was eccentric American musician Daniel Johnston and his request for a selection of comic books, “preference — superheroes”, that caught our eye.
Crikey spoke to Rachel Tulloch, from Hub Artists Services, who was looking after Johnston on his tour to Australia. Tulloch said she couldn’t recall if Johnston received comic books in his rider but had comic books with him the entire time, often going to a comic book store the first thing after touching down in a new city.
Rock and roll.
