Yesterday, Mike Rann described his government’s likely narrow election win as “the sweetest victory of all”.
With that comment, the South Australian Premier demonstrated, with insulting precision, the skills he has employed to morph from one of Australia’s most popular and trusted leaders to one of its smarmiest. And all in just a matter of months.
This is Rann’s definition of a sweet victory: last election the ALP boasted four marginals and 24 safe seats.
They now have 11 marginals and 14 safe seats.
There’s only one thing Mike Rann can do to restore a sense of decency and believability in South Australian politics. He should go. Now.
