With just days to go until the UK’s tightly contested election, the nation’s newspapers have officially nailed their colours to their mastheads, endorsing their picks of the leadership litter. But perhaps the biggest headline of the lot is that none of the country’s major papers have backed Gordon Brown. Ouch.

Here’s the breakdown:

In the blue corner: David Cameron and the Tories

The Sunday Telegraph:

The best choice for Britain is a Conservative government with a strong majority.

Economist:

Mr Cameron is much closer to answering the main question facing Britain than either of his rivals is.

Times:

David Cameron has shown the fortitude, judgment and character to lead this country back to a healthier, stronger future.

Sunday Times:

… the best solution will be an outright Conservative victory.

The Sun:

The Sun believes – and prays – that the Conservative leadership can put the great back into Great Britain.

News of the World:

… after much soul-searching, the News of the World believes that David Cameron and the Tory Party must now be given the chance to run the country.

The Mail:

Mr Cameron and the Conservatives should be trusted with your vote.

In the “colour us shocked” corner: Nick Clegg and the Lib Dems

Guardian:

If the Guardian had a vote it would be cast enthusiastically for the Liberal Democrats.

Observor:

There is a moral imperative to consider in this election, distinct from the old Labour-Tory contest.

Independent:

Vote for a hung parliament, and a better, fairer, greener Britain may just be ours.
