A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, the Force was strong with craftspeople. Bonnie Burton’s Star Wars Craft Book is out in September, but there are already heaps of fun, easy projects floating around the internet, like objects in the air under a Jedi’s mental control.

So if you’re a Star Wars geek — or know someone who is — why not make tonight a Star Wars crafting bee? Here are a few of Crikey’s favourites.

No, it’s not a trap; it’s Admiral Sackbar, the sandwich-bag puppet version of the Rebel Alliance leader. To achieve the unlikely combo of skater cool and Star Wars geek, customise a pair of sneakers! Buy a cheap pair of slip-ons from Kmart or Big W, decorate them with acrylic paints and fabric pens, and weatherproof your handiwork with spray fixative or fabric protectant.

Give the Princess Leia in your life a cute felt hair clip in the shape of Yoda, Chewbacca or a Jawa. All you’ll need are some coloured felts and threads, coloured buttons for eyes, hair clips, and a hot glue gun to glue the clips on.

Make glamorous cocktail rings from small colour pictures of Star Wars characters (or draw your own). Head to a craft shop for metal ring backings, clear, flat glass pebbles and craft glue that dries clear.

Ever lost a brown sock in the wash? Turn its companion into an Ewok sock puppet! You’ll need some beige, brown and red felt, a coloured pompom, fabric glue and googly eyes.

And if you’ve got some cardboard boxes lying around, turn them into a gnarly Imperial Star Destroyer and have your kids going “Nyyyyyawwww, pew-pew-pew!” all weekend.
