Seven management shake-up? There’s talk in TV circles about a possible change in the senior ranks of the Seven Network. Apparently Kerry Stokes and his KKR mates are worried about a lack of ratings oomph and overly expensive production costs. The most outlandish of all the stories is that Adam Boland, the wonder child of morning TV, is bound for a higher gig in programming, instead of departing at the end of this year. Stokes’ concerns over costs — he’s been very vocal in his complaints — won’t be met easily without a lot of change. Does this mean they’re eyeing a recapitalisation/float of Seven Media Group in the next year?
Churchill on the rails. There is a man who looks amazingly like Age CEO Don Churchill on my tram every morning. I’ve been wondering whether he is a victim of the Age corporate cost cutting campaign and has had his car park spot at Media House knocked on the head. Then again, perhaps he’s just a good, environmentally-friendly citizen. I wonder though why it was after 9am and he wasn’t in the office — perhaps he doesn’t have to clock on. Oh, and it’s one of those trams that never stops at the compulsory stop (a kind of tram stop sign) on Whiteman Street in South Melbourne. Where are the tram police when you really need them?
A miscast Malaysian PM. Was that a Chinese actor playing the former Malaysian prime minister (a Malay) in the comical retelling of the Hawke years on Sunday night? Anyone with the slightest knowledge of Malaysian politics knows that compared to Paul Keating’s description of the meglomaniac Dr Mahathir as “recalcitrant” actually portraying him as Chinese would be even more insulting.
The Heckler: unmasked. Mark Hawthorne is the ‘Heckler’ at the Sunday Age and has been since he left the business section a few weeks back. Has been kept very quiet.
Dead Wood for Liberals? Looks like the infighting from so called supporters for Liberal MP Jason Wood has started again. During the 2007 campaign Crikey got a tip which was spot on regarding Wood dropping the Liberal branding. This time around he has been accused of ‘doing a Petro’ in pandering to social justice groups.
Wood was quite proud of the work he had done with Make Poverty History, featuring the cause on his website. But recently the same group held a candidate’s forum in Berwick with Wood not bothering to show up. Apparently he has again been told to toe the party line and stay on message, messages that don’t include Wood’s view on social justice, environment, etc.
Turnbull smiling with Libs. The minute the election was called on the weekend Malcolm Turnbull’s smiling visage was adorning lamp posts all over Sydney’s eastern suburbs. Play spot the Liberal Party logo.
Albo goes it alone. It’s not just Liberal candidates airbrushing their leader and/or party from their campaign materials. I just received a big fold-out brochure from our local member Anthony Albanese and it barely mentions Labor (almost hidden in the fine-print). Moreover, it contains a group picture (in the House of Representatives) of him, Kevin Rudd (back turned to camera) and an unflattering (I might say glaring) Julia Gillard.
