As we go to press, Sky News is discussing whether Day 1 of the Really Real Julia Gillard is any different to Days 1-15 of Not Very Real, Not Fake, but Sort of Watered Down and Possibly on Prozac Prime Minister.
Pardon?
Don’t blame Sky for the inanity of that concept. She started it:
“It’s time for me to make sure the real Julia is well and truly on display, so I’m going to step up and take personal charge of what we do in the campaign from this point. I’m not Doris Day, I’m not naive about this. But I will be taking more direct control of the campaign from here.”
To employ an equally ridiculous quote from a pretty ridiculous political figure, Gillard will now be the ‘decider’.
There’s been a lot of talk over the weekend about just who’s responsible for the vapidity of this campaign. Today in the first of a two-parter, Bernard Keane says it’s your fault.
Yep, you. Voters. In short: you asked for it.
You get what you give, and as participants in this business of modern politics, that’s not much.
We’ve outsourced politics. We’ve hired democracy consultants. And so, here we are, stuck with Campaign Lite. Not to get all Get Up on you or anything, but only you have the ability to change the course of this election. It’s a cliche for a reason: it’s true.
