The Winners: The NRL Grand Final was on Nine, end of night. But it wasn’t as strong as last year. The X Factor did OK on Seven. Ten’s Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony at midnight averaged 414,000, which was more than OK at that time of night. Hamish and Andy showed on Ten why they are the biggest talents on TV. A bit bogan, a bit incorrect, but what the heck, it was interesting.

The Losers: None last night, the NRL Grand Final upset the night’s viewing.
News & CA: The early morning chats were all hit by the start of daylight saving. The solid figure for the Seven News at 6pm shows there is a large cohort of non-NRL fans, and a lot of rusted on Seven viewers.

That’s a total national share of 13.8% among the FTA channels last night for the nine digital channels. To combat Seven’s new 7Mate, Nine simulcast the NRL GF on Gem, it didn’t really work. Seven’s male skewing 7Mate was again solid last night. The best market was Adelaide where the FTA digital channels totalled a 16.9% share, with 15.5% in Perth.
- Pay TV: Nine won with a share of 26.0% from Seven on 23.9%, Ten on 16.8%, Pay TV’s 100 plus channels on 14.6%, the ABC with 12.1% and SBS with 4.0%. That left the 14 FTA channels with a total share of 85.4%, made up of 11.3% for the nine digital channels and 74.1% for the five main channels.

(All shares on the basis of combined overnight 6pm to midnight All People)
Glenn Dyer’s comments: Seven won the metro markets in all people and the main channels. GO won the digitals for Nine. 7Mate was third after 7TWO in its first week on air.
Last night: First off, even though it went more than six hours yesterday during the day, the men’s world road race title, like the under 23 title won by Australian Michael Matthews on Friday, was thrilling sport. The early hours allowed you to dip in and out, the final laps held the attention. It was an example (over the five days) of why Victoria and the Melbourne area is the sports capital of the country, despite what people in Sydney might think.
Last night the NRL Grand Final was the big event and it did OK for Nine, but flopped in Melbourne. Daylight saving affected some programs, especially in the morning. It is also school holidays in most states.
TONIGHT: Back to back news and current affairs on the ABC, with the second part of the good Andrew Mallard story on Australian Story at 8pm the stand out. Q&A at 9.35pm. Ten has the Commonwealth Games. The men’s gymnastics should be simply fabbo. Seven has The X Factor and The Event. Nine goes all dead with three repeats of Two and a Half Men. Test cricket on Foxtel and Commonwealth Games coverage for the truly addicted.
