Sunday, our holy day of rest, is the day that Prime Minister Gillard, flanked by her Multi Party Climate Change Committee, reveals the precise details of the new carbon pricing mechanism set to be embedded into our economy as early as July next year.
It’s also traditionally a day for sleeping in and/or cradling the toilet bowl, supping on bacon, reading the social pages or checking one’s brain out in front of a MasterChef elimination round — so you might need some help wrapping your head around the most major piece of economic reform in years.
We’re here to help.
You’re going to need a check list. After all, how do you assess the likely effectiveness of the scheme alongside the level of compensation handed to industry and households? Will it reduce emissions by at least 5% by 2020? How will this contribute to the likelihood of an international agreement? And how much has been allocated to adaptation and abatement? All questions we like to ask ourselves in between the ad breaks of Dancing with the Stars.
- So here’s a list of measures from Bernard Keane, and here’s what we know so far from Climate Spectator’s Giles Parkinson.
- Here’s a Crikey Canberra Calling podcast elaborating on the subject.
- The prime minister has promised to ruin her shoes in pursuit of informing the nation on the scheme, here’s a taster with Monday’s press conference transcript.
- And here’s an explosive First Dog infographic on the disproportionate impact of the impending tax on non-essential household items.
On Sunday you can check this wealth of information against rolling coverage by our Canberra correspondent Bernard Keane, fresh from the carbon tax lock-up and prime ministerial press conference at 12.15pm.
Keane will be filing his take at 1pm — roll out of bed, log on to the Crikey website with a side of poached eggs and attain enlightenment.
BYO Berocca. And Godspeed.
