Qantas’s $5 million man earned a fair bit of his salary this morning by fronting up to the Senate Committee on transport. Throughout two-and-a-half hours of questioning he was calm, confident, and generally impressive, both in his defence of grounding the airline last Saturday and of shifting jobs to Jetstar and low-cost subsidiaries like Jetconnect and Jetstar Asia.

Only once did he become ruffled, when Senator Brown accused him of being “devious and deceitful”.
