The Glenn Dyer breakdown: Seven’s night on what was a weak night of viewing, apart from A Moody Christmas. That can be seen from the fact that only four programs topped the million viewer mark last night.

Highway Patrol (1.73 million national viewers), The Force (1.861 million) and Dynamo: Magician Impossible (1.549 million) did their magic for Seven last night from 7.30 to 9.30pm and that easily did Nine and Ten. End of story. It was a dominant win by Seven which also won the main demos.

No X Factor or a similar program made for a boring night of TV alleviated by ABC1’s A Moody Christmas at 8.30pm. It had 570,000 metro and 846,000 national viewers. Its storyline was funny (brawls at backyard cricket on Christmas Day). The end though brought the story closer to the family than previous episodes have done. Rob Carlton is more than Kerry Packer in Paper Giants. A very, very funny role last night, “bro”.

ABC1’s new program at 9pm called Problems saw 403,000 well-meaning troopers stay to watch it in metro markets and 587,000 nationally. They were hardy souls. The program is a problem. Still you have to try things, otherwise you don’t get success. But that can be taken too far, just ask Ten how failure can beget failure.

Tonight: Test cricket with the second Test, Australia v South Africa from Adelaide today, tomorrow and over the weekend. Beauty and The Geek Australia on Seven (after the return of Once Upon a Time). Foodie shows on SBS ONE with a new one called The Very Hungry Frenchman at 8.30pm.

Redfern Now on ABC1 at 8.30pm (that’s after Kitchen Cabinet, at 8pm which is a repeat of the ABC2 program with Annabel Crabb. Why?) CSI on Nine. More 15-Minute Meals from Mr J Oliver (the miracle chef), and Law and Order SVU.
