With My Kitchen Rules (2.6 million nationally/1.8 million metro/820,000 regional) in the line-up, it was going to be Seven’s night, and it was, but the margin was a touch larger than you’d probably expect in the light of recent performances. Seven won by 10 percentage points, a big victory. Nine was a bit further back as The Block All Stars (1.94 million nationally/1.36 million metro/581,000 regional) and again did well, but the rest of the line-up was weak. MKR dragged Packed To the Rafters along in its wake (2.1 million nationally/1.38 million metro/769,000 regional). Ten battled the ABC (ABC1) in most markets to get close, but it missed in another average night for the network.

I thought Insight on SBS ONE (229,000 nationally/154,000 metro) last night had the most sensible discussion of the sports drugs story so far, including what happens at football clubs and who is in control. It was a valuable effort and something big mouths like Alan Jones on 2GB and reporters at TV and newspapers in Sydney should have watched.

A point about last night’s 7.30 on ABC1 (1.095 million nationally/694,000 metro). Should it have done a story on the court appearance of the man charged with the rape and murder of Jill Meagher, an ABC staffer in Melbourne? I don’t know if the story broadcast in Sydney was different to what aired in Melbourne, or whether the ABC aired a story on 7.30 in Victoria, but what was broadcast last night in Sydney worried me about its objectivity. The onscreen super on the graphic for this story “On Trial” was just wrong. No one was on trial. This was a committal hearing. That is a mistake you would expect 7.30 to have avoided.  The accused has pleaded guilty to one charge of rape and not guilty to murder and two new charges of rape. That means he is contesting those, and media reports should reflect that.

Metro and regional markets: A clean sweep for Seven (overall and the main channels) in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. And it was the same story in regional markets for Prime/7Qld. Nine was second everywhere (including WIN/NBN in the regions). Ten and the ABC/ABC1 battled it out for third place. Meanwhile, 7TWO won the digitals from GO. Seven leads the week in metro and regional markets with Nine (and WIN/NBN) second and the ABC/ABC1 third.

The losers: MasterChef: The Professionals on Ten, 680,000 nationally/524,000 metro. Not really good enough for a main menu item, is it? Back to the bistro’s casual dining menu, please, for more work, but beyond help at this very late stage in service.News and current affairs:

The Block All Stars on Nine, which is running a repeated of a repeat of a movie on Sherlock Holmes to replace the flop known as Parade’s End, which is on Gem at 9.30pm for those interested. SBS ONE has an interesting doco at 9.30pm that looks at what happened at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan two years ago after the quake and tsunami.
