Seven won easily in metro and regional markets. Nine was a weak second overall. Ten was a very weak fourth behind the ABC which was second in some metro markets (Sydney, Adelaide and Perth).

ABC1’s Redesign My Brain was watched by 1.264 national (865,000 metro/399,000 regional) viewers. The show was OK, but could have been a bit less earnest. Jennifer Byrne’s chat to author Tim Winton averaged 936,000 national (637,000 metro/299,000 regional) viewers, which was surprisingly solid. More than 200,000 people (100,000 in the regions) returned to ABC1 from other channels when Todd Sampson decided to put his brain up for public renovation, which was the bit of encouraging news from last night. Could Todd go and have a chat to the people on Big Brother and Beauty and The Geek about expanding their brains, please?

Seven’s Home and Away averaged 1.411 million national (888,000 metro/523,000 regional) viewers. It was the most watched program from 7pm onwards, which tells us how dire the rest of the offerings were. Nine’s Top Gear returned at 8.30pm, having been shown on Foxtel — 762,000 national (512,000 metro/250,000 regional) viewers. Not really good enough.

Beauty and The Geek Australia drew 1.168 million national (804,000 metro/364,000 regional) viewers. An unfortunate program, down there with Big Brother 1.137 million national (801,000 metro/336,000 regional) viewers last night, and giving The Bachelor and A League of Their Own (both Ten) a run for the bottom of the pile at the moment. The next couple of weeks will tell us (and Seven) if viewers stick with the Geeks, or desert them as they did last year.

Nine’s Today had only its second win yesterday in breakfast since Seven changed Sunrise hosts — in metro markets, 322,000 to 313,000 (viewing levels are down because of daylight saving). Nationally, Sunrise won easily, 550,000 viewers to 483,000.

More good news for Seven. This week CBS picked up The Blacklist for a full 22 episode first season — now NBC has picked up Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on a similar basis. Both are a hit here for Seven. Fox has picked up Sleepy Hollow for a full season. It’s not a hit here for Ten. They are the first three new-season US series to get a full run pick up. Seven West Media and Prime Media group revealed this morning  it has renewed its affiliation agreement for six years until 2019. No indication of how much Prime will pay. It’s also a recognition that Seven West and Prime reckon the 75% limit for TV coverage across the country won’t be changing soon.
