Round two! Today Education Minister Christopher Pyne will try again to push his unpopular university deregulation legislation through the Senate — with some minor changes.
Yesterday Pyne blamed a Greens and Labor scare campaign for opposition to the Coalition’s plan to slash course funding and allow universities to set their own fees — which was voted down in the Senate last night — but in fact a good portion of voters from the government’s own side oppose the plan. They’re not big fans of the other budget measures that are yet to pass, either.
These numbers, from yesterday’s Essential polling done exclusively for Crikey, are a damning summary of the situation facing the Abbott government in the last sitting week of Parliament:
