It was an engaging and insightful discussion with Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at UNHCR, Gillian Triggs about her book – Speaking Up.

Crikey’s Reporters Amber Schultz and Kishor Napier-Raman discussed with Gillian, issues around COVID-19 and human rights, as well as the Black Lives Matter movement.

Gillian also shared her insights on refugees, gender and race equality, as well as the focus on leadership.

Amber Schultz

Amber Schultz covered health and social affairs for Crikey. In 2022 she was awarded a Young Walkley Award for her on-the-ground coverage of the Ukrainian refugee crisis, and has been shortlisted for four other Young Walkleys. In 2021 she was awarded the 2021 Mumbrella Young Writer of the Year for her coverage of sexual violence, and in 2018 completed the Jacoby-Walkley scholarship. She holds master's degrees in journalism and international relations.

Kishor Napier-Raman

Former Politics Reporter

Kishor is a federal politics reporter for Crikey, based in the Canberra press gallery. He writes news and analysis with a focus on foreign policy, legal affairs and government transparency. Previously, he was a general reporter in Crikey's Sydney office, where he started in 2018 while completing an arts/law degree at the University of Sydney.

Professor Gillian Triggs served as President of the Australian Human Rights Commission from 2012 to 2017. She has held many significant academic positions, including director of the British Institute for International and Comparative Law and dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Sydney. She is currently a Vice-Chancellor's Fellow at the University of Melbourne and Chair of Justice Connect.
