Word around the TV industry is that relations between Southern Star and Endermol Southern Star, and the Ten Network are said to have soured and the reason is believed to be this YouTube posting.
It’s a rehearsal of the finale of Big Brother last month.
It clearly shows that there was a Plan B, or Plan A; a radically different ending to the program.
This was the practice run through for host Gretel Killeen, as well as the production staff.
These rehearsals make sure the live broadcast is as hitch free as possible on the night. The run throughs can be informal, silly or odd things are said, strange faces, quips etc.
They are usually not put down to tape because of their informality. This rehearsal was and I wonder if any one knew that at the time. That in itself indicates it was an inside job and the source is an insider from the production group.
It shows clearly there was a plan that the winner (Aleisha Cowcher after a long and involved vote and count that came down to the wire) was to have been announced in the Big Brother House, not outside…
The runner up was to leave the house, leaving the winner inside as the sole occupant. But for some reason the program plan changed. It may have had something to do with the fact that the announcement of the winner was delayed during the broadcast due to the closeness of the final vote tally.
If you listen to the above posting you can hear host Gretel Killeen discussing the way the winner was to be announced. There are two other clips posted from the same source from the rehearsal.
These could only have come from one of three sources: Ten Network, Southern Star and Endermol South Star (51% owned by Endermol, 49% announced by Southern Star). These were posted very soon after Big Brother concluded and have created a storm at Ten who are not very happy.
Is that why there are rumours that Ten is thinking of moving production of the local version of the US series, So You Think You Can Dance from Southern Star to Fremantlemedia? It may also be why Big Brother might end up moving from Dreamworld on the Gold Coast to Sydney as part of a wide-ranging revamp of the program.
But to be fair to the production team, had the long suffering Killeen not been forced to pad the programme for an extra hour as votes were counted, we may have missed the magic moment when she was accidently hit on the head by a flying rubber chicken:
