Electorate analysis: Sandringham covers expensive bayside real estate south of the city, from Sandringham south to Beaumaris and east through Cheltenham to the Nepean Highway. It was created in 1955 and only ever won by Labor at the 1982 election that brought John Cain to power, although it was left marginal following a 9.0 per cent swing in 2002. The member since 1992 has been Murray Thompson, who held front-bench positions from 2002 until February 2008, when he was dropped to make way for Nationals members brought in under the new coalition agreement.
