Yesterday marked Pakistan’s Independence Day – today, it’s India’s turn to raise the flag and sing the national anthem.

64 years after partition, contemporary Pakistan could hardly be further from Jinnah’s vision of a secular, non-sectarian, stable, democratic and secular safe-haven for the subcontinent’s Muslims.

The independence day edition of “Dawn” newspaper carries a series of photos “straight from the days of Partition” – assembled leaders, salutes, refugees. Reminders of a time of hope and bloodshed.

64 years on, bloodshed is more visible than hope. Jinnah’s long-ago vision now seems as Utopian as Gandhi’s could ever have done.

But it’s important to remember utopian visions, and to dream of new ones – even just once a year.
