Wood falls from the sky. Right? Ditto timber products – like paper. Well, that seems to be what Greens leader Bob Brown thinks.
Brown has been now calling for an end to timber imports. He has been campaigning to have the Australian forestry industry shut down for years, and has recently demonstrated his opposition to the plantation forestry industry.
Here’s a release from Brown from last Thursday:
“The Howard Government should ban the import of tropical rainforest timbers” Senator Bob Brown said today, rejecting Forestry Minister Abetz’s claim that this option is too complex…
“The Stern Report nails logging of the forests as a worse climate change menace than all of the world’s urban transport. Logging rainforests is also driving rare species to extinction. The only exception would be strictly inspected local mills doing selective logging – that is a responsibility Australia should require if we are to import timbers at all” Senator Brown said.
Yet on the 11 October Brown issued a release talking about a Senate motion congratulating “the King Island Council on its success in banning plantation forestry from its farmland”.
Yup. The stuff clearly falls from the sky.
