Football media personality and professional “controversialist” Sam
Newman probably thought burglars were invading his luxury seaside home
in Brighton, Victoria, when he was woken up this morning by the sound
of breaking glass.

After discovering a smashed window, he went outside and confronted a
woman on his property. He told 3AW that the woman “said a few things
which I couldn’t understand, she seemed to be alcohol-affected.”

He
then took her inside and called the police. Victoria Police have
confirmed they were called to a Brighton esplanade home at about 5:30am
and were interviewing a 36-year-old woman.

Home invasions seem something of an occupational hazard for Nine’s AFL Footy Show
playboy millionaire, who’s almost as famous for his notoriously
colourful private life as his provocative media prognosticating.

Newman
has been on the receiving end of two infamous incidents where one
ex-girlfriend “accidentally” drove over one of his legs after an
argument, while the boyfriend of another ex-girlfriend punched him in
the face and broke his nose after famously ramming a van through the
former footballer’s front gate.

Newman later told the ABC’s Australia Story , in an episode on his controversial career “The trouble with Sam”, about his run in with his jealous ram-raid interloper.

“I
heard this thumping, and then the doorbell rang and I went to answer it
and the person I was with said, ‘I wouldn’t answer it’, and I said ‘why
wouldn’t I answer it, it’s my house and the door’s ringing?’. So I
opened the door and he gave me a bit of seeing to. Changed my face a
bit. Had to have my nose fixed. I had my nose fixed and I had a bit of
plastic surgery on my nose. Yeah, plastic surgery on my nose, my nose
only, but that’s another story.”

While it is some time ago, this
five-year-old ABC program provides a good perspective on the way
Newman’s family and friends view the provocative media star who, even
as he closes in on life at 60, has lost little of his ability to still
find himself trapped in a tabloid after-hours life. Just recently Today Tonight targeted him over allegations from past incidents at the Melbourne and Perth casinos.
