Electorate analysis: One of eight LNP gains from Labor at the 2009 election, Cleveland is a coastal electorate in Brisbane’s south-eastern suburbs which extends from Birkdale through Wellington Point and Cleveland to Thornlands and across the bay to Stradbroke Island. It was created at the one-vote one-value redistribution that took effect at the 1992 election, when it was won for Labor by Darryl Briskey, who had previously been the member for Redlands. Briskey retired at the 2006 election and was succeeded by Phil Weightman, a local police officer, who narrowly held the seat for Labor in the face of an 8.1 per cent swing. A further 1.5 per cent swing in 2009 was slight by the standards of that election, but enough under the circumstances to deliver it to LNP candidate Mark Robinson, a reverend at the Bible College of Queensland. Robinson was promoted first to shadow parliamentary secretary for apprenticeships and trade in the November 2010 reshuffle, and then to shadow cabinet in main roads, fisheries and marine infrastructure after Campbell Newman became leader in April 2011.
