There is no Friday in this working week, so there will be no Wankley Award as such. But we couldn’t exit for the Easter break without acknowledging Tracee Hutchison’s oversharing effort in Saturday’s Age newspaper. It began:
I have a fairly intimate confession to make. I’ve never given my v-gina a nickname. It’s not that I feel I’ve been neglecting it or that this confession should also suggest I’m unfamiliar with the process of squatting over a mirror.
Whoa. What could inspire such an opener? Apparently that controversial ad — you know, the one where a woman totes around her pet beaver keeping it happy with manicures, beaches and Kotex tampons.
It inspired a special rage in Hutchison:
…who in their right mind thought it was OK to thinly disguise a blatant male ogling at beaver-as-v-gina sunning itself on the beach as a tampon ad?
Make no mistake. There was absolutely no ambiguity here. This ad said loudly — and apparently proudly — that women are nothing more than v-ginas on legs. It not only offended and degraded women, it underestimated and degraded men.
It is little wonder that the Advertising Standards Board was bombarded with complaints and the ad was pulled amid howling criticism. But if the tampon-making company actually did the research it said it did — research that found young women are quite comfortable with their v-ginas being referred to as toothy, amphibious rodents — surely this is the ultimate proof that the impact of DIY p-rn and raunch culture has successfully deluded an entire generation of women and men about what feminism was actually supposed to achieve?
Beaver Las Vegas! This ad is, apparently, everything that’s wrong with feminism, nay the world. Look where DIY p-rn has got us — a rodenty v-gina dentata on the box! And to think, this just one day after International Women’s Day.
But we found it kind of amusing. And a blessed relief from ads where the unmentionable beaver is safely tucked away as girls frolic and surf. Because they can. (YouTube here).
