With overnight news that hostage Douglas Wood may be released, The Age
reports this morning that Sheikh Taj al-Din al-Hilali has been advised
to keep a low profile as there are concerns that he may be the subject
of a kidnap attempt. The reports come from a spokesman for the cleric.
Who is “warning” Sheikh al-Hilali? And the most obvious question of all, who is Sheikh Taj al-Din al-Hilali, whom The Age refers
to as “Australia’s most senior Muslim”? Certainly, some views
expressed by him in the past would not echo the views of most moderate
Muslims, if Tony McAdam’s article on this curious man is close to the
mark.
