LOCAL stocks plunged to the lowest level in more than four years today as $60 billion was wiped off the value of the sharemarket.

The time must surely be approaching when we can find a better way to get a handle on the state of the economy than continual and breathless reporting of the hysterical fluctuations of the stock market.
