The Glenn Dyer breakdown: Nine’s night, thanks to the second and final episode of Hamish and Andy’s look at New Zealand and Australia. The Aussie trip averaged 1.219 million viewers (down more than 100,000 from last week) in metro markets and 1.736 million in national markets (down from 1.9 million a week earlier for the NZ trip).

Nine only won because of a big victory in Melbourne where Hamish and Andy are still very popular (and Melbourne media royalty). Nine won the main channels by nearly 10 share points, and won overall by 8 points. That more than offset wins for Seven in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

Seven’s Sunday Night regained its mantle as top show of the night with 1.236 million metro viewers at 6.30pm and nearly 1.9 million nationally. Ten’s line-up of Merlin (534,000 metro and 776,000 national viewers) at 6.30 pm, the “fresh” Modern Family at 7.30pm (725,000 and  989,000 nationally) and the 8pm repeat (789,000 metro and 1.066 million  nationally, and then Homeland at 8.30pm (638,000 and 858,000 nationally) did sort of OK, but in reality, it was just another night that viewers didn’t really tune in. The core audience of 18 to 40 was off looking at Hamish and Andy’s Caravan of Courage antics on Nine.

Tonight: Four Corners runs the ITV doco on Jimmy Savile that triggered the current scandal which has hurt the reputation of the BBC. It was run in the UK in early October and only now making it to air in Australia. It is also significant that Four Corners isn’t putting to air the BBC Panorama edition that exposed the incompetence in BBC News (especially the Newsnight program) on this terrible story. Seven has two hours of The X Factor‘s grand final performance and then Castle. Nine has The Mentalist at 8.30pm, Ten has Can of Worms, if you are desperate.

US Update: The Seven Network will get 13 instead of 22 episodes of the Last Resort series which was axed by the US ABC network on Friday night. Seven had the series down for a prominent role in its early 2013 schedule in Australia. Last Resort (Lost meets The Hunt for Red October, American style), was one of two programs boned. The other was 666 Park Avenue (which starred Rachel Taylor, the Australian actress). Thirteen episodes of that program will also air in the US on ABC. It is bound for Fox8 on Foxtel in Australia.

Last Week: Seven again won both in metro and regional markets, the latter by daylight. Seven won the main channels, Nine won the digitals in the metro markets. Seven won the demos thanks to the two episodes of The X Factor which again rated strongly. Saturday night’s James Bond movie on Seven, Quantum of Solace, had 1.007 million metro and 1.476 million national viewers and was easily the most-watched movie of the week, and probably of this year so far. Only 55,000 people watched Ten’s broadcast of the Australia v England rugby union test from London in metro markets and 79,000 nationally from around 1.15am Sunday.
