83% of Australians are
satisfied with the way they are currently employed, with just 11%
saying they are dissatisfied and 6% unable to say, according to a
special Roy Morgan poll.

The Morgan research finds that workers are
confused about their employment arrangements:

17% of workers believe they are employed under an AWA (3% individual
workplace agreement; 13% collective workplace agreement; 1% can’t say what kind
of AWA). However, official estimates suggest that just 4% of the working
population is employed under an AWA…

Despite the general high satisfaction
ratings, that offers plenty of scope for the Your Rights at Work campaign. If
people don’t know about the status of their employment, they will be less sure
about the status of their pay and conditions.

Perceptions obviously play a part here. AWAs
are on workers’ minds – and Morgan finds that satisfaction is 8% lower
among workers who believe they are employed under an AWA.

There’s still plenty of time between now
and the next election for people to discover the facts about their employment
arrangements.

But those arrangements can change – and
with that in mind, votes could well drift from the Coalition to Labor.
