Gday Crikey,

I read your column calling for “Dave Raves” and instantly recalled a very late evening in the NSW parliament. It involved a helluva lot of drinks, a long corridor, several members of the press gallery and a recycling bin, containing one Dave Penberthy. The memory of it kept people in laughs for weeks afterwards.

He’s an excellent journalist and a top bloke, and he’s going to be a great editor.


A Crikey lifer and WASP writes:

I was just reading the list of editors who’ve made it before 40, and a close look at the list reveals something interesting – not one non-Anglo-Saxon name amongst them! Why is this? Are the newspapers a haven for WASPs? Also, if you look at the credits after almost any ABC or commercial TV program, and you’ll see the same thing – hardly any “ethnic” names.

Given our strong multicultural influence since the 1940s, this unbalanced enthic blend is quite surprising and interesting. Any thoughts?


Where are the female editors?

Funny isn’t it that not one woman appears in the ever-burgeoning Crikey list of youngest-ever editors. While women wait in the wings patiently for upgrades, obviously we should be at the pub talking to the next rung up the ladder.
