Stan Wawrinka is no Roger Federer so far as Australian TV viewers are concerned. Yes, they watched last night, but not in the same numbers as they did the night before when the Fed beat Andy Murray. In metro markets the audience fell from around 1.28 million to 926,000. Nationally the audience fell to from 1.890 million to 1.362 million. That was a national drop of 528,000 (354,000 in metro markets), such as the pulling power of Roger Federer. Real star quality.

Nine’s News (at 6 and 6.30pm in metro markets) and ACA at 7pm topped the metro ratings (and Nine News the national ratings), but Nine can’t boast that ACA beat the tennis at 7pm, because the game didn’t start until around 7.40pm. Looking at Seven last night, it needs to make a decision one way or the other on Today Tonight. The ratings are really 10 minutes of news and around 20 minutes of a truncated program.

In the morning and the ratings for Wake Up told us why Ten was happy to accept Adam Boland’s resignation. Wake Up remains a dud and hiring Steven Wood to reboot it because he spent a long time running Today (before Facebook and social media and the 24 hour news cycle) won’t help. Wake Up‘s audience hasn’t changed from before Christmas, while Studio 10 is a bit higher above 50,000 for the five market metro (which is not really good, but it is 20,000 or more a morning better than Wake Up). The real question is whether the Titanic can be saved after the iceberg has struck and the deck chairs have been reshuffled.
