Scott Morrison’s so-called compassion

Ellen O’Gallagher writes: Re. “Morrison’s use of asylum seeker death unravels as facts come back to bite” (yesterday). It is worth reading Scott Morrison’s maiden speech. Here is a short excerpt which follows his personal statement of belief in the Christian faith  “From my faith I derive the values of loving-kindness, justice and righteousness, to act with compassion and kindness, acknowledging our common humanity and to consider the welfare of others; to fight for a fair go for everyone to fulfil their human potential and to remove whatever unjust obstacles stand in their way… and to do what is right, to respect the rule of law, the sanctity of human life and the moral integrity of marriage and the family…”  He then goes on to quote Desmond Tutu.  All we can conclude after reading that is that he must not consider the refugees to be human.

John Richardson writes: Bernard Keane is absolutely right to finger Immigration Minister Scott Morrison as having characteristics that make him the “quintessential Abbott government minister: inexperience, aggression & a disdain for facts”.

Not a wimp, according to Prime Minister Tony Abbott, but perhaps just the Colonel Blimp in his league of extraordinary gentlemen?

Peter Matters writes: Bernard Keane’s short list of misdeeds is charitable indeed. Yet rather than to keep adding to the list forever and ever, I submit it is more value to us — the community — as well as the government, to define the basic causes of their incompetence.

The current ministry from the Prime Minister down all have minds hard wired into the 19th century. They are totally incapable of understanding that now, in the 21st century, this small planet of ours — including Australia — is facing an emergency totally new and threatening to turn Mother Earth into a half-dead garbage dump before the century is out. The insane grab for resources to feed the decadent, profligate, totally out of control and exponentially expanding colossus of consumerism is doing untold global damage to land, sea and air and in the process threatening all life on Earth. And we, homo sapiens, have been brainwashed into believing the only values worth pursuing are the ones expressed in the amount of goods we can buy.

This country has the capacity to show all mankind that we can only survive by rediscovering the values that are free because they are all there within us, but we cannot do so with the current government — especially under the leadership of a man who has proven, while Opposition Leader, by his own words and actions oozing malice and ill will that he is emotionally and intellectually unfit for his job.

The cost of education

Ian Franklin writes: Re. “Saville’s Shout: school’s out at Google … financial advice: don’t bother …” (yesterday). A bit of free advice to those considering sending their children to private schools — don’t do it.

Take it from a parent who made the sacrifices to find $20,000+ a year: save your money and instead, keep it to pay their HECS debt at university. It is a much sounder proposition for parent and child.
