This week we continue Crikey’s 15th birthday celebration with another commemorative timeline. We are now seven years into our history. And 2007 was an especially memorable year for the media, the internet, the world and, of course, for Crikey.
Two companies unveiled world-beating cash cows, sorry, technological advancements that would go on to revolutionise our social and professional lives: Apple launched the iPhone, and Netflix began undermining bricks-and-mortar video rental stores all over North America.
Blendtec founder Tom Dickson enjoyed a whirlwind ride to fame with a series of videos testing the efficacy of his products by shredding the almighty shit out of anything he could cram in a blender.
YouTube became so popular that in the US, Democrats and Republicans used it to broadcast debates during the presidential primaries. Even Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II got in on the act, launching a royal YouTube channel.
Closer to home, 2007 was the year both iView and National Indigenous TV launched. And here at Crikey, we provided the critical edge to coverage of an Australian federal election that too often felt like a sanguine love-in.
