A close win for Nine in Total People and the main channels last night in metro markets, but a big win for Seven in the regions. But the metro wins by Nine depended on a big win in Melbourne — Seven won Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Nine’s win in Melbourne was due to weak performances by Seven’s programs and a moderate effort for the news, ACA and the AFL version of The Footy Show which averaged 277,000 viewers from 8.40pm.

The first episode of the second series of Redesign My Brain on ABC did well with 965,000 viewers, easily beating The Footy Show on Nine nationally. Only 72,000 people watched the NRL version of the show in Brisbane — so much for winning the first State of Origin game on Wednesday night. 132,000 people watched in Sydney and NSW lost the game by a point!

For the second morning in a row Nine’s Today won the metros breakfast battle over Seven’s Sunrise, 315,000 to 282,000 — that was the sort of margin Sunrise had a week ago over Today. The fall to 282,000 for Sunrise is a surprise. Seven doesn’t want this to happen when it is battling so many other problems, like 6 to 7 pm in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and weak performance of House Rules compared to last year (though it has clearly bested Nine’s Reno Rumble). Home and Away meanwhile continues to anchor Seven’s Monday to Thursday evenings. Last night it had 1.230 million national viewers with solid support from the regions to offset continuing weakness in the metros. It was fourth nationally. Masterchef Australia topped the metros with 1.052 million viewers and was second nationally with 1.397 million.
