Things aren’t looking good for the billionaire mining magnate turned MP with the balance of power, Clive Palmer. A Galaxy poll of 506 voters in Palmer’s Queensland electorate of Fairfax conducted for The Courier-Mail on the weekend revealed Palmer’s support has dropped from 26.5% at the last election to just 2%. The report claims internal Liberal Party polling shows Palmer only picking up 1% of the vote. Palmer tweeted that the poll was “propaganda”.

It has been a steady decline in politics for the man who once held the balance of power in Parliament. Now the Palmer United Party is just Palmer and Dio Wang, after he was abandoned by senators Jacqui Lambie and Glenn Lazarus. Palmer’s business concerns are catching up to him, with claims Palmer was potentially acting as a “shadow director” of the troubled Queensland Nickel refinery while he was also serving in Parliament. Queensland Nickel was put into voluntary administration last week.

Palmer has been an oddity in the Australian political scene for the last three years. Never afraid to say what he was thinking, but often known for storming out of interviews. He has never been short of words. So as a tribute, Crikey today present stuff Clive has said, with apologies to Shit Clive Palmer Says:

  • On getting into politics: “I got sick of sitting on the couch watching Julia Gillard look at me through the bloody TV. I said ‘I’ve got to get to Parliament and get rid of that woman.'”
  • On his first day in Parliament: “Yes, it’s a nice place Canberra, but I wouldn’t like to live here. So it’s not the sort of place that stimulates you.”
  • “No, I’m not [a part-time MP], I’m full-time, fully retired from business, 100 per cent politician. That’s all I’m doing. Nothing else.” (Terry Smith might have something to say about that.)
  • “You know, Rupert Murdoch’s wife Wendi Deng is a Chinese spy, and that’s been right across the world.” (Makes us wonder what Clive thinks of Rupert Murdoch’s new fiancee, Jerry Hall.)
  • Telling students to write to then-education minister Christopher Pyne and “tell him he’s a mongrel”.
  • He also called the Chinese government “mongrels” on Q&A.
  • That time he said Tony Abbott should “commit suicide”, and then later clarified he meant political suicide.
  • When he accused former prime minister Tony Abbott of designing his paid-parental leave scheme “‘just so that the Prime Minister’s chief-of-staff [Peta Credlin] can receive a massive benefit when she gets pregnant”.
  • The Australian has a conga line of coalition cheerleaders as columnists. It’s not a newspaper, just a propaganda rag” — Tweet.
  • His strange marriage proposal that would reintroduce civil unions and leave all power over marriages to churches.
  • “It is not worth commenting on shit like that.” — In response to claims he was caught using his iPad while driving.
  • And, of course, his fondness for saying goodbye to other politicians. Like Campbell Newman, Tony Abbott, and Bronwyn Bishop.
