The Republicans now have their “presumptive nominee” in the personage of one Donald Trump, with his last challenger, John Kasich, declaring that the Lord would find another purpose for him, as he had clearly misunderstood the divine directive to run for president. But many in the GOP are still holding out for a hero and are not getting on board Team Trump.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, the highest-ranking Republican in the country, is not going to endorse Trump, though he’d said he would endorse whoever the nominee was (perhaps the “as long as it’s not Trump” was sotto voce). “I think conservatives want to know: Does he share our values and our principles? There’s a lot of questions conservatives are going to want answers to.”

Trump obviously did not take the high road, because why start now? “I am not ready to support Speaker Ryan’s agenda,” he said in a statement (young, handsome and telegenic Ryan’s agenda may or may not include trying to snatch the nomination. He says he won’t, but people don’t always mean things like that). But you know who he is willing to support? Hispanics! Except, of course, for the ones in Mexico who would like to come to the US …
