So this is real …
… and so should Australia’s support for his near-maniacal attempt at United Nations glory be. No, really. How’s this for three reasons:
- The peculiar brand of international soft diplomacy practiced by the UN might be the only thing K-Rudd is actually good at it. It’s not inconceivable he could do a good job. It’s not inconceivable.
- Any vain hope Rudd had of returning to Australian domestic politics would be over. This is an important consideration.
- Can an Australian government really, in good conscience, not support a half-way decent candidate to fly its flag so prominently around the world? How laughable would it be to the rest of the world, ignorant of Rudd’s, let’s say, checkered political past, if we didn’t?
There are better, more qualified candidates to run the UN. They’ll almost certainly beat Rudd, rest assured. But for the moment, Malcolm Turnbull and Julie Bishop should swallow that sick feeling in their mouths and add a profile picture twibbon for KevUN.
