Ahead of the 40th Anniversary of man first walking on the moon, 20 July 1969, NASA has found and digitally restored the original landing footage using the same Hollywood studio that restored Citizen Kane and aptly, Star Wars. It’s Crikey’s Video of the Day today.
In honour of the original moonwalk, here are some of the best stories about the day Neil and Buzz landed and what’s happened since:
Video of first moon walk gets a touch-up. The video was only brought back to life after it was rediscovered following an extensive three-year search through some 45,000 video cassettes in NASA’s analogue archives. — Sydney Morning Herald
Buzz Aldrin says “race to the moon is a dead end”. Second man to walk on the moon said the US should focus on a mission to Mars and drop plans to re-explore the moon. — Daniel Nasaw, The Guardian
Apollo 11: A few thoughts. Forty years ago, on 20 July 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first human beings to walk on the Moon. Here are 10 things you might not have known about Apollo 11, humanity’s “one priceless moment”. — Tim Handley, BBC News
We never played criket on the dish, say operators. While The Dish was a popular hit, it may be expecting too much for all members of the 1960s scientific community to watch it again, particularly those from the tracking station at Honeysuckle Creek outside Canberra. — The Australian
The moon landing through Soviet eyes. A son of the Cold War tells what it was like from the losing side of the Space Race — and how the U.S.S.R.’s space program fizzled after Sputnik and Gagarin. — Saswato R. Das, Scientific American
Lunar landing spoiled pop culture’s romance with the moon. When Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969, he also all but squashed the classic pop song device of using the moon as a romantic metaphor. — Chris Jordan, The North Western
40 Years after the moon landing: why aren’t people smarter? A look at old periodicals reveals something very interesting about human nature. Newspapers and magazines from the early 1900s were full of advertisements for instant weight loss gizmos, miracle cures, and all other forms of self-evident quackery. A century later, this stuff is still being advertised — and lots of people are buying. — Benjamin Radford, Live Science
Moon Week: Humans are ace. Really ace. BBC Moon Week promo ad is an animated retelling of the moon landing — mUmBRELLA
The vocal minority insists it was all smoke and mirrors. Forty years after men first touched the lifeless dirt of the Moon — and they did. Really. Honest. — polling consistently suggests that some 6 percent of Americans believe the landings were faked and could not have happened. The series of landings, one of the greatest gambles of the human race, was an elaborate hoax developed to raise national pride, many among them insist. — John Schwartz, The New York Times
Mythbusters take on the moon landing photo hoax claims. The Mythbusters examine the “filmed in a studio” myth by recreating the moon landing. — Part 1 / Part 2
