Electorate analysis: Yuroke is located in Melbourne’s northern outskirts, extending from Tullamarine and Melbourne Airport through Greenvale to Yuroke and Craigieburn and beyond. It was created at the 2002 election upon the abolition of Tullamarine, which was won narrowly for the Liberals by combative radio personality Bernie Finn upon its creation in 1992. Labor’s Liz Beattie defeated Finn with a 7.0 per cent swing in 1999, and her margin was further inflated by 5.3 per cent through redistribution and 13.7 per cent with the 2002 election swing. A member of the Socialist Left faction, Beattie has been stuck at parliamentary secretary level since 2002, being overlooked in favour of Lily D’Ambrosio for the Left’s vacancy in cabinet caused by Lynne Kosky’s resignation in January 2010.
